Who was Hazrat Zaid bin Sanah? The story of the Prophet and the Jewish scholar

Who was Hazrat Zaid bin Sanah?

Zaid ibn Sanah was a Jewish scholar. One time Zaid ibn Sanah bought dates from the Holy Prophet. Only one or two days were left in the period of handing over the dates. They demanded to dates the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) in a very bitter and sour tone in the crowd and grabbed the Prophet’s skirt and chador.

He looked at Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) with sharp eyes and shouted O, Muhammad! This is the way of all of you, The children of Abdul Muttalib, That you are always late in paying the dues of the people and procrastination has become your habit. Seeing this scene, Hazrat Umar (RA) lost his temper and stared with very angry and poisonous eyes and said:

O enemy of ALLAH! So you are insulting the Messenger of ALLAH?

Swear to ALLAH! If the courtesy and respect of the Holy Prophet (saws) had not been. I would have just blown your head off with my sword. On hearing this, The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: O, Umar! What are you saying? You should have helped us both by encouraging me to pay the truth and instructing me to demand it gently.

Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) ordered the Hazrat Umar (RA): O, Umar! Give him dates equal to his right, and give him some extra dates. Hazrat Umar (RA) asked the beloved Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): Why should we give him extra dates?

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: Since you frightened him by looking at you with crooked eyes. When Hazrat Umar (RA) gave more dates than the right. Hazrat Zaid ibn Sanah (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

O, Umar! Why are you giving dates extra than I deserve? Hazrat Umar said, “Since I frightened you by looking at you with crooked eyes, The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) has ordered me to give you more than you deserve for your comfort.

On hearing this, Hazrat Zaid ibn Sanah said: O, Umar! Do you know that I am Zaid bin Sanah?
Hazrat Umar: Yes,
You are Zaid bin Sanah, the great scholar of the Jews. They said
Yes.

On hearing this, Hazrat Umar (RA) asked, Then why did you commit such an insult to our beloved Holy Prophet (SAW)?

Hazrat Zaid ibn Sanah replied:

O, Umar! The fact is that I saw in the Torah all the signs of the Prophet of the End Times in his person. But I was testing him about the two signs. One is that their patience will prevail over ignorance and the more ignorance is dealt with, the more their patience will increase. So I saw these two signs in them through this recipe

And I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is indeed the true Prophet. O Umar! I am a very rich man. I can testify to you that I gave half of my wealth in charity to the ummah of the Holy Prophet (saws). Then he came to the Prophet (saws) and converted to Islam after reciting the Qur’an.
